Citation for award of Belgian Croix de Guerre with Palm

On 10 May 1940 Germany invaded Belgium and France with their armoured units pushing undetected through the Forest of Ardennes to cut off and surround the Allied units that had advanced into Belgium. When British and adjacent French forces were pushed back to the sea by the German operation, the British government decided to evacuate the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) as well as several French divisions at Dunkirk in Operation Dynamo. The Belgian Government in exile subsequently awarded their Valour Award, the Croix de Guerre, to British and French Forces in this period. When the person being awarded the Croix de Guerre was also mentioned in despatches, this distinction was denoted by a palm worn on the ribbon.
