Deddington Flower show 1913 in the Castle Grounds
1913
This Photo Post Card has been kindly supplied by Mrs Audrey Cox daughter of Frank Bowler (holding rope on LH side) and niece of Leslie Bowler (holding rope on RH side).
The Bowlers were a well known Deddington family descended from Thomas William Bowler who developed the hat of that name. They lived in Eastleigh House (since renamed as Bowler House) until post WWII. The eldest brother, Leslie, served in WWI and the Home Guard in WWII. Geoffrey and his younger brother, Frank, served in both World Wars. Their parents lived in The Poplars (since renamed as Castle End). See p.114 of A Parish at War for more information about the family..
Frank Bowler, as well as identifying himself and his brother in the photograph, says in a note:
‘Tall man in Bowler hat, HC MASON landlord of the pub (pipe in mouth) WJ FRENCH, under umbrella, George COGGINS, Solicitor’ (sic).
Editor: This note is a little ambiguous as to who is under the umbrella. If anyone can identify them – or any one else in the picture – please contact Rob Forsyth (tel:338384).
